Triple Bottom Line (3Ps of Sustainiability)

The Triple Bottom Line (TBL) and

TBL Defined:
The TBL is an accounting framework that incorporates three dimensions of performance: social, environmental and financial. This differs from traditional reporting frameworks as it includes environmental and social measures that can be difficult to assign appropriate means of measurement. The TBL dimensions are also commonly called the three Ps: people, planet and profits. We will refer to these as the 3Ps.

The TBL captures the essence of sustainability by measuring the impact of an organization's activities on the world including profitability, social / human and environmental capital. With the ratification of the United Nations the TBL became standard for urban and community accounting in early 2007 as the dominant approach to public sector full cost accounting.
Molson Construction embraces the triple bottom line model of sustainability depicted above. Sustainable solutions offer not only economic returns (PROFITS), but also must provide tangible levels of environmental (PLANET) and social (PEOPLE) progress. An more comprehensive examination of sustainability in the realm of sustainable development of residential communities considers political sustainability and cultural sustainability to be included in the realm of social sustainability (PEOPLE).
At Molson Construction, the TBL involves a future-oriented approach which looks one century into the future.

Environmental Progress (PLANET) / Natural Capital:
We are progressing toward least impact approaches, exploring "net zero solutions" to conserve energy, reduce the need for scarce natural resources, and showing respect for the environment. Our designs strive to deliver net zero energy usage, net zero waste production, and net zero environmental disturbance. Our ecological footprint is minimized through each project's life-cycle by harnessing innovations, especially in environmental technologies, and minding our sustainability priorities.

Just as the planet needs the sun, people need our plant. This is why we put the PLANET first with no compromise, then we consider people in the context of a healthy environment. Specialists in "green" construction are involved in all stages of the project's life-cycle using an integrated design process.
Social Progress (PEOPLE) / Human Capital:
People are considered in our design using the century principle of 100 year planning. During this time period, not only the client's immediate needs are considered, but future scenarios are also considered. The scope is not limited to the occupants over time, but also the vibrancy of the community for which a project belongs.

We adhere strictly to our company values and respect the not only social sustainability in the traditional sense, but also integrate cultural and political sustainability into the category of PEOPLE and social progress. Design of high-performance "green" buildings usually inadvertently overlooks the "PEOPLE" aspect of design, and the completed construction becomes a burden on the day-to-day occupants of the residence.

Cultural elements of the local communities which we work in are central to the integration of the building design into the overall community. This includes creating healthy buildings that are accessible to those with special needs, high-performance in operation, and low in maintenance needs. Cultural sustainability (Socio-cultural) considers the preferences, culture and needs of the community including attention to the historical nature of the communities in which they are located. To achieve these ends, we must engage with all relevant stakeholders and support the communities in which we work.

The socio-political realm is taken into account by taking full advantage of government sponsored "green" initiatives, and continuing to support political parties that share the sustainability beliefs of our organization.

Architects specializing in design with people in mind are central to the entire project life-cycle.
Economic Viability (PROFITS) / Steady Profitability:
All business activities must generate a profit in order to succeed, grow, and add economic value to society. We must demonstrate that our above mentioned focus on PLANET + PEOPLE can and must be equitable and lead to long-term business viability in concert with our core ideology and long term strategic planning.

Project accountants are relied upon throughout the entire project life-cycle to ensure mark-up and profits are kept at a bare minimum and hence economic value is ensured for the client.
